Your Own Home Studio – Part 2 of 2

“One of the biggest investments you can make as a rapper is to invest into your own studio.  It will cut studio costs and give you the option to create at any given moment.  Read more Below”

As I said in Part 1, we are going to briefly touch on the 6 elements needed to start your own home studio.  So lets go on and jump right into it.  The first element is the microphone so lets start there.

Mic Check One-Two-One-Two
This is the most important asset to you as a rapper, however that’s just my opinion.  Its like trying to play basketball with out the hoops.  Can’t play with out it.  So make sure you pick a decent mic.  Not one that’s going to leave your vocals sounding horrible.  Make sure you do your research.  You can find a decent one for under $500 but over $250 and that’s pushing it.  Remember this is the most important asset so I’d say shoot for quality over quantity

I got mine off ebay for a heck of a deal.  But another great place To look is www.musiciansfriend.com.  You can also make payments with them as well.

Pop Filter
This is used to filter out your Plosives (If you got The Official How To Rap Manual then you know what plosives are) words that start with letters like B and P.  This really helps your vocals in a good way.  Without one your vocals will sound a little harsh in the plosive area.  You can find these from $20-$40.  You can also do the door man way and use a hanger with pantyhose around it.

The Pop Filter is the black round circle in front of the mic connected to the mic stand.

Mic Stand
You can find a cheap at radioshack for say $24.  You definitely need a mic stand to hold your mic and pop filter.

The Mic Stand that holds the mic.

Headphones
Any studio quality head phones should work well.  You can find a nice one for around $30-$100.  You don’t need much just enough to get the job done.

Headphones (Black and Red)

Personal Computer
This is another must have for your studio.  Simply because your running the whole studio through your computer system.  A lot of folks say to get the Mac for your recording studio but honestly I seen people use different kinds from a Dell to a HP.  The MBOX can work on both but was mainly made specifically for Mac Users.  I ran my first in house studio off of a laptop.  A Dell to be exact.  Will run you any where from $299-$3000.

This is the Dell computer that runs my home studio system.

MBOX
This is probably the next big thing your going to want to save for.  The MBOX has Protools already built in it so that comes in handy.  If you don’t know Protools is actually the industry standard musical system used to record songs.  Its many other programs like Nuendo Or Cakewalk but Protools is the ultimate in my opinion.

You use the MBOX to record your vocals through Protools.

This is the MBOX that controls your headphones and mic.  Also has protools already built into it.  This is a older model.

Okay that’s it, there you have it, some tips on getting your own home studio together.  I’d say it’s a wise investment that will put you ahead of the game.

Below Is a song I recorded from the actual set up that you see in the pics.  Its not mastered but its mixed, once mastered, it should turn out to be industry standard quality.  I’ll put a link for you to tell the difference as soon as possible.

Your Own Home Studio – Part 1 of 2

“One of the biggest investments you can make as a rapper is to invest into your own studio.  It will cut studio costs and give you the option to create at any given moment.  Read more Below”

Lets talk about investing in a studio that will fit your needs.  You’re a rapper so you definitely need a studio to record.  The studio to a rapper is one of the most important assets that you can have.  If you don’t have the means to afford your own studio then you’ll have to settle for one that’s more suitable for your budget.

Investing in your own home studio really isn’t as hard as you may think.  I’m all about helping the next artist get closer to his or her dreams.  Its hard enough trying to break into this industry as is, take it from somebody who knows all to well.

I’ve been rapping for years, going from studio to studio.  I’ve been to my fair share of home studios, some in a closet others better than some of your high paid studios,  and one thing I can admit too is its nothing like having your own in house studio.

The feeling of not having to search for a decent studio to record and being able to create a song as soon as you get an idea is a wonderful feeling.  Having a mic on hand at any given moment makes you appreciate your art form that much more.

Some people say you can afford one but I saved a little bit from every check before I was able to get my first studio (Which wasn’t much at the time).  Not only that but I baught my set up one piece at a time.  Soon as I saved up enough money for the mic I got what I needed.
Omega Studios In Maryland – My Engineer T and Jim (Jim Handles Mastering But T is who I take my recordings to, to get mixed.

I knew from going to so many studios what mic I wanted, which was a “Blue Bird” I might add.  I recorded my first EP on a “Bird” and fell in love with it ever since.  As a rapper all we really need is a microphone to record with and the rest can be taken care of with a nice engineer.  A great engineer can do wonders with vocals recorded with a half way decent mic.

The benefits of having your own studio should make you jump on trying to get your own.  With my home studio I was able to wake up and record in the middle of the night.  Didn’t have to call a soul or set up some studio time.  I don’t know how many times I got an idea and recorded a song and wasn’t able to actually record it until I could book studio time.  Which could turn in to days even weeks depending on where you go.  By that time the feeling is gone and hard to capture.

1.Microphone

3.Mic Stand
4.Head Phones

6.MBOX

In PART 2 we’ll touch on each of these briefly and I’ll even have a recording done on my own home studio set up.

Building Stage Presence

Considering the fact that most artist make their money from shows you would want your performance game to be at the top of its level.  There is no greater feeling than connecting with your audience at a live gig.

Stage Presence is something that you can build upon but some people are just naturals.  We’ll discuss some basic things you can do to help build your stage presence later, but first lets talk about the importance of stage presence in your career.

Considering the fact that most artist make their money from shows you would want your performance game to be at the top of its level.  There is no greater feeling than connecting with your audience at a live gig.

The adrenaline rush to see the crowd connecting to you and your music is a site to see.  To have thousands and thousands of fans at your beckon call.  “Put your hands up” and to have a sea of people putting their hands in the air and following every word you say is a remarkable feeling.

Some artist are just natural performers and some aren’t.  Its intimidating to see a huge crowd in front of you and it takes a lot courage to perform in front of huge crowds.

I’ve had my share of performance and I’ve opened up for major acts like Shyne, Trina, Ludacris, and Black Rob to name a few.  But it wasn’t until later in my corner that I learned to connect with my audience.

In the beginning of my career I was notoriously famous for getting on stage and forgetting my lines.  A lot of the time it was due to lack= of being focused and prepared for my show.  Other times it was outside sources that contributed to my lack of memory.  But as I learned to focus and prepare myself I found my stage presence to become better with time.

Here are 6 Tips you can use to help connect with your audience.
oEye Contact
oFreestyle
oCrowd Participation/Acknowledge
oSmile
oWork The Stage
oPractice

Eye Contact – One way to connect with your audience is through eye  contact.  I don’t know how often I see it.  Rappers on stage rapping but doing it with their eyes closed.  Their whole set is done with them on stage rapping into the mic with their eyes closed.  I’ve seen artist complete their whole set and not look into the crowd not one time.

Personally, I see this and view this as a sign of nervousness.  You don’t want to see what the crowd is feeling about your music.  Your scared to see them not feeling you, but your actually making it worst by not looking at your audience.  When you go to an interview they tell you always to make eye contact.  I think you should do the same when your on stage.

Work The Stage – Don’t just stand in one spot, work the stage, move from side to side performing your songs.  It will be hard for the folks to connect with you if your only performing for the crowd on the left side and not the ones on the right side.  Don’t forget to look at your fans and interact with your audience.

Practice – Last and definitely not least the absolutely best way to build stage presence is with time and lots of practice.  You know they say practice makes perfect.  You’ll get better the more shows you do.

Keep that in mind when you book your next show.  Practice some of the tips we discussed and knock’em dead with your stage presence.  I was told from a A&R with Capitol Records that good stage performance can be worked on by not taught.

Coming off as being relaxed looks like you know your way around the stage, which looks even better to critiques of your performance.  With that said, good luck at your next performance.  Don’t rush, make eye contact and practice, practice, practice.

Good Luck

The How2rap Point-System – Where Words Rhyme

Where Words Rhyme

The point-system is probably the most amazing tool for anyone learning to rap – Simply because it gives you a grid so to speak for your rhymes.

If you read the article “How Different Points Can Make Different Lines” you have some more insight on how you can incorporate bar combinations into your lyrics.  Not only can the point-system be used for line combos but you can also use it to determine where you want your lines to rhyme.

You may have a rhyme scheme that ends on point 8 for instance like 2-8.  So a four bar rhyme ending on point 8 would look like:

Bar 1                   2-8
Bar 2                   2-8
Bar 3                   2-8
Bar 4                   2-8

Now with that being said you can choose to make your words rhyme any where.  Of course the standard position would be to have your words Rhyme on points 8

Let’s explore some other spots you can place your rhyming words.  Keep in mind it will be up to you to determine the best place to fit your rhyme words (make sure you like how it sounds and that they are not rushed or off point/beat). Let’s use points 2-8 to get you rolling in the right direction.

So in a 2-8 bar some great places to stick your rhyming words would be points 4 and 8 on some lines and just 8 on others.  The beauty of it all is you can make points 3 rhyme with 8 or 5 and 8 and so forth.  It’s really up to you the artist where you want your lines to rhyme.

For example one scenario with a 2-8 line scheme may look like this: () Represents point with rhyming word

Bar 1                   2  3 (4) 5 6 7 (8)
Bar 2                   2  3  4  5 6 7 (8)
Bar 3                   2  3 (4) 5 6 7 (8)
Bar 4                   2  3  4  5 6 7 (8)

The above example shows you rhyming on points 8 and adding a rhyming word on points 4 on bars 1 and 3.

This is just one way you can use the point-system to find where words rhyme.  Practice using different point combinations in your verses and adding rhyming words to certain points – It will be a great asset to your arsenal.  For practice check out the examples above and construct some of your verses the same way.

Hope this helps.  If you have any questions leave a comment.  Good luck

5 Syllable Structures To Use In Your Rhymes

In chapter 8 of The Official How To Rap Manual rappers learn about incorporating syllable structures and combos into their rhymes.  The book teaches about four syllable structures you can use in your rhymes for improving rhyming ability.  Keep in mind the best way to use these syllable structures are at the end of your lines preferably in the standard rhyming positions.

5 Syllable Structures To Place Into Your Rhymes

1) One Syllable Words – This structure works well at the end of your lines and depending on the words used can come off as quick and forceful.  Practice combining two one syllable words together through out your bars to hear the difference it makes.

2) Two Syllable Words – This structure also works well when incorporated in your rhymes.  2 syllable words add a nice affect to your lines.  Although they can add a different affect when combined with one syllable words.

3) Three Syllable Words – This structure is a little harder to incorporate into your rhymes but have a added affect that differentiates from all of the others.

4) Syllable Combos – You can enhance the affect of each of these syllable structures by combining them together in the rhyming sections of your lyrics.

5) Singy Syllables – These are when you add a extra long stress to your syllables almost to the point where your singing the syllable but not quite.  Don’t over do it when using this structure because to much of it will definitely water down your verse.

Reread chapter 8 in The Official How To Rap Manual to gather a better understanding into incorporating syllable structures into your rhymes.  Understanding how syllables structures can enhance the affect of  your rhymes will only help you that much more in your rap arsenal.  Practice combining and using the above structures in your rhymes to see how they affect your rhymes.

Until Next time,  Good Luck

Breath Control Exercises For Rappers

How you breath can play a big part in how you complete your rhymes.  More so on the stage than in the booth.  Some rappers who haven’t been performing long will find themselves running out of breath on stage on a constant basis.  Which can then make you lose focus and concentration on your words and all together.

Some times when you write you have to keep in mind where exactly it is your going to need to take that long breath.  Especially with the longer bars. Because breathing is something that we do constantly in everyday life, many aspiring rappers forget to take the need to breathe into consideration when first writing their lyrics. But the sort of breathing you need to be able to perform whilst on stage is very different to how you might breathe whilst watching a film or playing Fortnite online. You will find you are much more conscious of your breathing patterns, for a start, and they are likely to have an impact on your rhythm and intonation.

Breathe control can be an essential part of making your performance sounds as good as possible. It doesn’t feel to good when you run out of breath on the last few words of your lines.  Especially with the longer bars.  It doesn’t feel to good when you run out of breath on the last few words of your lines.  Especially when your trying to let people know how nice your skills are.  The crowd the beat and everything in between will block you out if your vocals are weak, and the listeners won’t be able to hear what you are saying.

With that said its good to do breathing exercises to help with breath control.  Big Pun had unbelievable breath control.  Its said he could spit 6 bars without taking a breath.  Three is hard enough let alone six.  Twister is another MC who I believe has supermanish breath control.

Breathing is the most natural thing we do everyday.  Without proper breathing and breath control, the voice isn’t as efficient or as effective as it could be.  Running out of air at the end of your lines can make you sound strained, weak, and breathy.

So lets do a few exercises that you can do to help with your breathing.

Breathing Exercises
  • Inhale completely on a slow, silent five count.  Hold for five.  Exhale completely on five.  Repeat until you can do it easily.  (If you get dizzy, STOP) Increase to counts of 6,7 and 8.
  • Lie on the floor with a book on your stomach.  Make the book rise and fall as you breath.
Okay lets add some sound.  Its better to stand because you get a more complete breath when you do.
  • Take a good deep breath and sustain a “ah” sound on a single pitch that feels comfortable.  It will sound like your singing.  You should feel slight tension in your stomach muscles.
  • Hold the “Ah” for a 10 count.  Do not strain.
  • Try it again for 12 seconds  Note: Drop out if you can’t hold it for quite that long, before straining or gasping.
  • Keep practicing as needed until your able to hold for atleast 15 seconds or longer.
Slow Breaths

  • Take a deep breath and count slowly as far as you can without gasping.
  • Repeat while trying to get a few more numbers each time.  Aim for 60 seconds.  Keep track of your progress.
Note:  You can use alphabets or days of the week too.  Also don’t waste breath as you count.  F, S, V, Th are breath waisters.  Give them only enough air to make the sound.

Hold a finger close to your lips and breathe out slowly.  Your breath should feel warm and moist and notice the action of the diaphragm as you exhale.  This is the correct amount of breath when singers sing.  Most singers do not need to force or push are through the vocal chords to produce a good strong sound.

Well I hope these breath control exercises will help you be able to complete your lines when performing live.

Until next time….Good Luck

Some Basics Of Hook Writing

Let me try and provide you some sort of theory behind what makes a song work or not.  When listening to a song what is the #1 thing that you remember most?

You’ve guessed it, the hook, also known as the chorus.  The hook is, most often then none, the one element that makes a song memorable.  I find myself often humming the hook of my favorite song throughout the day.

For song writers writing a catchy hook can sometimes seem like magic.  Before we start-ask yourself what a hook is.  A hook can be a short stanza or verse making it a musical or vocal portion of a song that is a transition between verses.

There are no length requirements to how long a hook is supposed to be.  It could be a few short words or a few big sentences.  As a general rule of the thumb the hook is usually equal to or shorter than eight bars.  You can try flipping the script on them and make the hook longer than the verses or the verses shorter than the hook.

As a song writer we want the hook to be remembered in the mist of all the verses in your song.  The hook becomes the transition between verses in every song you hear.  This repetition of hook is a contributing factor to why hooks become so catchy.  Sometimes the hook comes first but in other circumstances the verse starts before the hook.

Until next time….Good Luck
